What to do if Your AC Stops Working

air conditioningIt’s the hottest day of the summer, and of course that’s right when the AC unit stops working!  First, you want to contact someone who is certified in AC repair Orlando, and then you’ll need to figure out what you can do to endure the heat until they can come and complete the repair of your system.

Here are a few things you can do to feel cooler:

  • Close the blinds and the windows during the day.  Closed blinds will help to block the sunlight coming in and thus prevent temperatures from rising quickly throughout your home.  If you have direct sunlight that hits your windows you can even consider using reflective materials such as tin foil or quick car shades to help keep temperatures from rising by reflecting heat away from the home.
  • Open windows at night and let cooler air in.  While you want to keep the windows and blinds closed during the day, if it cools off at night where you live this is a good time to open up the windows and let the cooler air in.  You might even want to use a fan to help pull cooler air in as well.
  • Use ceiling and stationary fans too.  While ceiling fans don’t actually cool the air they do create movement which makes a breeze and helps to make the room feel cooler.  This is true of standing fans as well.  Any fan used in a room can help to make it feel cooler by moving the air throughout the space.
  • Avoid adding extra heat to your home.  Turn off lights that aren’t in use and don’t use appliances such as the dryer or oven at all.  Using the oven is the quickest way to add extra heat to your home, and extra heat is very hard to get rid of.  While it might mean for a few lighter or cooler meals, the trade off is well worth the heat savings.
  • Drink more water and eat cooler foods.  Cold drinks, cool meals, and even ice cream can help quickly cool your internal temperature and help you feel cooler.
  • If the AC is going to be out for an extended period of time, take the opportunity to visit other places that have AC.  This might include visiting with family and friends, going to the mall or other shopping areas, or even going to a fun arcade, bowling alley, or other place and activity.
  • Finally, one of the best ways to beat the heat no matter what the reason is to go swimming!  Who doesn’t enjoy a great dip in the pool.

For most people being without AC is a temporary problem that is quickly resolved when the repair or service man arrives, it could in fact be a forced but much needed break from your daily routine to allow you to go on some adventures or outings with family or friends.
